“They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read.” Nehemiah 8:8. After Nehemiah had repaired the walls of Jerusalem and rebuilt the temple, all the people were called together so that they might hear the Word of God. The scribe Ezra blessed the Lord in prayer, and then read slowly and distinctly. In order to help the assembled thousands understand each passage, he carefully explained the meaning. What a wonderful pattern of Bible study for all of us! We must not hurry over the Scriptures, but prayerfully examine them to discover the practical lessons the Lord wants to convey to our hearts. A well-read Bible means well-fed soul.
