“Ponder the path of your feet and let all your ways be established.” Proverbs 4:26. We should think carefully before signing a contract, making a verbal agreement, or starting a major project. It can be very difficult, even impossible, to back out of a commitment when it becomes evident we’ve made an unwise decision. When a thoughtless decision is made in the spiritual realm, the consequences are far worse. We see this in the case of King Jehoshaphat who pledged to join with wicked Ahab in a battle against Syria. Even though God’s prophet issued a solemn warning of impending disaster, he went ahead because he found it difficult to reverse his decision. Consequently, the armies of Israel and Judah were beaten, Ahab was killed, and Jehoshaphat was severely rebuked by the Lord. Before you give your word to someone or commit yourself to any major endeavor, be sure you have engaged in prayer and careful reflection. Pray before you act!
