“The manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.” I Corinthians 12:7 The Bible records a story about an independent person who balked at the help offered him. Naaman, a great warrior of Syria, suffered from leprosy. He sought out the prophet Elisha for healing but had preconceived ideas about how the healing should take place. So when Elisha sent his messenger to tell him to dip in the Jordan River seen times, Naaman was enraged. But Naaman’s own servants gave wise advice: “If the prophet had told you to do something great, would you not have done it?” (II Kings 5:13). And so Naaman followed the prophet’s simple instructions, and his leprosy was cured. God give us gifts to aid each other. But self-sufficiency shuts the door on much–needed help. Let’s be open to the helping had He provides. The first step in getting help is humility.
