“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest…” Proverbs 6:10. Many texts in the Bible warn against the sin of idleness. It is evident God disapproves of those who refuse to work or who perform their duties with a “slack hand” (Proverbs 10:4). He expects us to be wide awake and alert in performing our tasks, and to do them with all our might (Ecclesiastes 9:10). No one can think up more ridiculous excuses for not doing his duty than the slothful man who dearly loves ease, leisure, and sleep. Those who refuse to be industrious will eventually be rudely awakened from their daydreams, for desperate need and grinding poverty is sure to come (Proverbs 24:30-34). God expects us to be diligent in the tasks we undertake. The Bible promises no loaves to the loafer!
